Joshana Chinappa
We are in conversation with one of the leading squash players of the country, Joshana Chinappa, Joshana thanks a lot for talking to us.
First up, how and why did you pick the sport of squash, its not a sport that all children grow up playing?
Well, my dad is a squash player, he has played for the state before, I used to just tag along to the club with him, and he used to hit with me and I used to hit with some of the other squash players there and that is how it all started.
At what age did you start playing squash?
I was about 9 or 20 years when I started playing squash.
And at the young age when you started, had you planned in your mind that this is what I want to do, I am going to be a champion one day or did it, or did you just play it for recreation?
Well, when I was 8 or 9 years of age I used to play all sports badminton, tennis, squash everything. But then when I was 10 I just decided that this is what I am going to do permanently.
Tell us a little about your experience training under renowned coach Mr. Satinder Pal at the Harvard University.
Well, America was okay, I did not really enjoy it that much. I was just 15 when I went and trained over there and at that time it was just another thing to do, there were not too many players for me to play with over there. And gradually I also trained in Amsterdam, and that was lot more fun. There were a lot of girls playing on that circuit and it was good training with them. Now my training base is in England and I really enjoy that training base.
