ATHLETES - BOXING

Although he went out in the first round at the 2004 Athens Olympics, he grabbed the gold medal in the 54kg aka bantamweight category at the 2006 Commonwealth Games defeating Louis Julie of Mauritius and became the second ever Indian boxer to grab the top honours at the event.
A career-threatening wrist injury struck him soon after which kept him out of action for most of 2007 season. He had to undergo a surgery and some months of rehabilitation to fight it off. He worked with physical trainer Heath Matthews as well as well-known orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ferguson during that time.
At the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in February 2008, he overwhelmed Olympic silver medallist Thai Worapoj Pitchkoom to earn the India's solitary gold medal. For his act, he was named as the best boxer in the tournament. The success is certainly commendable for the pugilist considering his astounding comeback from the grave damage. While making his return he had brief stint of training in Germany too. He is considered as the best bet amongst Indian boxers for the upcoming Olympics.
